A hearty welcome & thank you to all the runners and walkers who, over the years, have made the Mt. Rainier to the Pacific Relay a popular and major event in the Pacific Northwest.

It’s encouraging and exciting to see an ever-growing number of athletes take on the challenge of this beautiful course.

Each year we marvel at your stamina, courage, dedication and enthusiastic spirit as you face each leg of the relay.

We encourage your feedback, suggestions and remarks to aid us in our desire to continually improve the event. Have a magnificent relay!

THE COURSE: The Mt. Rainier to the Pacific Relay is run 152.5 miles through some of the most beautiful areas of Washington; the Evergreen State. You will enjoy scenic vistas, farm lands, forests, lakes, streams and beaches as you pass through many delightful small towns and hamlets along the route which follows well-maintained state secondary highways.

REGISTRATION: Team Captains can register online at AllSportCentral.com. TEAM CAPTAINS: Team Captains must create and pay for entire team. After paying, Team Captains can add additional team members by logging in and selecting "MANAGE TEAM ROSTER" from the MyAllSport Athlete's Home Page.

Captains who mailed in their registration forms will receive an e-mail with instructions regarding entering your remaining team members information online. Be sure to estimate the t-shirt sizes even if individual team information is delayed.

EQUIPMENT: Each team must show the following items at the Check-In area prior to the race:
• One (1) First-Aid Kit
• Two (2) Flashlights
• Three (3) Reflective Vests
Teams cannot start unless and until the equipment is presented and approved.

TSHIRTS & SWEATSHIRTS: Every team member gets a T-shirt as part of the entry fee. Sweatshirts may be substituted for the T-shirt for an additional $15 when you enter. Each team registration must specify T-shirt/Sweatshirt sizes to insure correct size/quantity ordering and team packet preparation. T-shirts & Sweatshirts are high-quality shirts featuring a unique multi-colored design. For others who wish to make a purchase, T-shirts are available online at the EventMgmnt.com E-Store, the start and finish areas for $10.00 each, Sweatshirts for $25.00 each.

AWARDS: All finishers receive commemorative medals. Additional medals can be ordered online at the EventMgmnt.com E-Store for $5.00 each, via the registration form. 1st Place finishers in each category receive special awards. Other awards are presented to 2nd through 5th Place, or possibly deeper in larger categories

AWARDS & PRESENTATION PARTY: Let's Party!!! Awards will be presented at 6:00PM at the Ocean Shores Lions Club. Moderately priced food and beverages are available. The first 250 entrants who attend receive a free beverage.

EXCHANGE POINTS: Exchange Points will be at areas allowing parking and traffic control. There will be volunteers at each Exchange Point. Each runner must “touch-off” to the next team member (no batons). Toilets are located at Exchange Points providing equipment and security. The portable toilets need to placed at locations in advance of projected participant or Course Marshal arrival. It has been demonstrated in past years that the portable toilets in unguarded areas are prime targets for vandalism or theft — as such, a few areas that pose this potential may not have portable toilets. This will be indicated in the Relay Manuals to be distributed to the Team Captains. There will be more than one unit in key locations.

SAFETY: Runner safety is our main concern. Use caution to avoid accidents. Each runner must wear a reflective vest and use a flashlight during nighttime hours. You must have extra batteries and flashlights on hand. It is essential that flashlights be kept on while running. Give the drivers an early chance to see you, even before their headlights pick up your reflective material. Wearing of reflective clothing is strongly encouraged in addition to the reflective vest. Each person outside a van at night must wear reflective materials. Don’t risk your team being disqualified for safety violations.

TRAFFIC: Police are alerted to the Relay and will ticket traffic violations. Traffic direction is by team volunteer course marshals. These people are following directions provided for their position duties and, as such, are race officials, looking to protect event participants. All relay entrants must obey directions or be subject to penalty. It is absolutely necessary to keep vehicles off the road at exchange points. Also, spectators and team members must stay off the road during all hours; especially at night.

FOOD & WATER: Each team must carry its own food and plenty of water. Food suggestions are: sandwiches, fruit, cookies and crackers. There are many stores along the route that can provide other supplies. Some stores remain open all night for the Relay.

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS: All teams within 100 miles of the Tenino/Rochester I-5 freeway junction are required to furnish two (2) volunteers. This includes locations encompassed by Bellingham and Ocean Shores, Washington; Hillsboro, McMinnville, Mt. Angel and Sandy, Oregon. [Call (503) 643-9440 if in doubt]. Early volunteer job location requests are given priority consideration; but, only to the extent reasonably possible. We must staff the entire course and, as such, some requests may not be at the time or position desired.

WALK TEAMS: This group begins at 3:00 P.M. at the start of the Leg 13 exchange east of I-5. The same route, leg distances and traffic rules apply. Walk Teams must walk — not run. Teams monitor each other for adhering to the rules of “walking” (not running). As in previous years, the 100 mile groups provide their own Course Marshal Volunteers until the run teams catch up and regular Course Marshal assignments take effect. These assignments will be conveyed in the Team Captains packets.

TEAM MATCHING: For teams seeking people to fill the last few spots on their team — or — individuals seeking a team, we provide a matching system. The list can be mailed or faxed to those needing the information. Referrals may be made if there is an obvious “fit”, but, primary contact for individuals would be made by Team Captains seeking people. Requests for teams and people may also be made on-line at EventMgmnt.com. As people are selected from the fill list, Team Captains need to promptly inform us so the list is kept current and calls to those listed are limited.

SUBSTITUTIONS & SINGLE RUNNERS: Substitutions may be made by completing an entry form. All substitutes cost $10.00 per runner. “Singles” must submit an entry form with the $80.00 entry fee.

OTHER AMENITIES: Mid-race showers and breakfast in Elma. Outdoor finish-area festivities, food and refreshments. Vendor displays. Team photos. Massages available. Showers available at North Beach HS.

START & FINISH: The start is at the Ashford Lions Club Building on Hwy. 706 west of Ashford, Washington. Starts will be in small groupings, staggered to minimize traffic congestion on the course, (we need to be aware of and be courteous to recreational travelers who are using the highway to head to Mt. Rainier for the weekend). Prepare for varied weather conditions; rain or heat.

Run Team start in waves based on total team average 10K times. Generally, slower teams start earlier, faster teams later, with some divisions broken into separate waves for better course management. It’s important for Team Captains to estimate times realistically as course volunteer placement scheduling and your safety depend on calculations made from your reported times which indicate the time and location of teams on the course.

The last leg includes hard-packed beach, with the finish just one block east, at the Shilo Inns Ocean Shores Suites Hotel.

START TIMES & VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENTS will be sent Captains via e-mail beginning July 12th. Lete entries will be notified via e-mail as needed after.

Classes will be assigned starts in the same wave to the extent possible. Early starts for faster teams is discouraged due to course equipment and volunteer position scheduling.

TEAM INFORMATION: RUN TEAMS consist of 11 runners, each running three five mile (approximately) “legs”.

WALK TEAMS have 7 walkers to traverse the 100 mile course that begins at LEG #13.

Entries will be accepted until the limit of 350 Run Teams is reached
